Take Action: Atmospheric river/flooding

Is your facility prepared for the imminent threat of flooding? Preparing for severe weather events and knowing how to respond when they occur can help minimize damage and disruption to your organization.

  • When Flooding is Imminent

    Elevate valuables.

    • Move important documents, electronics and valuables to higher ground or elevated areas within your property.

    Secure outdoor items.

Verify that your sump pump is working.

    • Consider installing a backup battery for power outages.

    Clear gutters and downspouts.

    • Ensure your gutters and drainage systems are clear of leaves and debris to allow proper water flow.

Use sandbags to block flood water.

    • Sandbags can be used in front of your exterior doors to slow water entry into the building.
  • During the Flood

    Turn off utilities.

    • If safe to do so, turn off electricity, gas and water to prevent damage and further safety hazards.

    Move to higher ground.

    • Stay away from flooded areas, both on foot and in vehicles. Move to higher ground and follow evacuation orders if issued.

    Stay informed.

    • Listen to emergency broadcasts and notifications for updates on the situation, evacuation orders and safety instructions.
  • After the Flood

    Assess the property's safety.

    • Only return to your property once authorities have deemed it safe. Keep an eye out for hazards like debris, structural damage and contaminated water.

    Document damage.

    • Document and take photos of any damages to your property and belongings due to the flood. This will assist in the claim process.

    Contact your insurance company.

    • Notify your insurance company of flood damage as soon as possible to get the claim process started.

    Clean and restore.

    • Thoroughly clean and disinfect the facility to prevent mold growth.
    • Work with professionals to repair any damages to your property. Avoid DIY repairs that can lead to safety issues.

    Consider a CM Sensor.
