Take Action: Severe winter weather/snow collapse
Is your facility prepared for the imminent threat of severe winter weather and heavy snowfall? Preparing for severe weather events and knowing how to respond when they occur can help minimize damage and disruption to your organization.
- Following a Winter Event
Clear Snow Immediately- If safe, remove fresh snow after each snowfall.
- Shovel or use a snowblower to clear front steps, sidewalks and driveways of snow and ice.
- Apply de-icing product to walkways to prevent slips and falls.
- Ensure entryways and emergency exits are cleared.
- Clear snow from your building's furnace exhaust vent.
- For significant snow amounts, consider clearing snow from the roof with a snow rake or locate a reputable insured contractor to perform the service.
Prevent Pipes from Freezing- Maintain a thermostat setting of at least 55 degrees F.
- Open cabinet doors for pipes near exterior walls.
- Allow faucets to drip during extremely cold weather.
- If you don’t already have a free CM Sensor installed, contact us to increase your protection!
Check for Indoor Damage- Look for signs of snow load damage: creaking sounds, sagging roof, cracks or water stains.
- Inspect doors and windows that don't close properly.
Proper Generator Usage- If using a generator following power loss, ensure it is operating outside in a well-ventilated area.
- Avoid fueling portable generators while the engine is hot.
- Do not run generators unattended, follow manufacturer’s recommendations.
Respond to Property Damage- Prioritize safety.
- Document losses and take photos of any damage.
- Contact your insurance agent.
- Move damaged property to a safe area.
