Tips to Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls

It’s happened to all of us. A momentary lapse of attention, looking at our phones, distracted by a problem. Whatever the case, we’ve all been a victim to a slip trip and fall of some sort. Slips, trips, and falls are one of the greatest personal injury hazards facing your organization. They are also the leading cause of non-fatal medically treated injuries in the U.S. Through housekeeping, maintenance, and training, you can help protect others from serious injury, and prevent your camp from experience a costly claim. Follow these tips:

  • Good housekeeping

  • Create and maintain proper lighting: Incidents are more likely to occur if walking surfaces are not illuminated. Use adequate lighting in hallways, staircases, walkways, basements, etc. Replace burnt-out bulbs and repair fixtures as needed. When entering a room always turn the light on first. Keep areas around light switches clear and accessible.

  • Ensure that all stairs have sturdy handrails

  • Keep walkways clear of cords and other obstacles

  • Conduct periodic inspections for slip and fall hazards

  • Reduce wet or slippery surfaces

  • Parking lots/sidewalks: Keep parking lots and sidewalks in good condition. Be aware of any cracks or potholes. When snow and ice are present treat the conditions accordingly. Keep a log to document salting, sanding, and shoveling schedules. For changes in elevation draw awareness to the hazard by painting lines in a visible color such as yellow

  • Food preparation areas: Instruct workers to clean up spills immediately. Place non-skid floor mats near sinks and other areas that are likely to become wet and slippery

  • Bathrooms and other floors: Display wet floors signs as needed. Snow, rain, or other debris tracked in from outside can cause a slippery walking surface. Place walk-off mats at entry ways to prevent incidents.

  • Train your staff

  • Work with your employees to help prevent slips, trips, and falls. Encourage staff and guests to take ownership of their safety.

  • Recommend the use of non-slip footwear. Employees should be expected to wear footwear appropriate to their tasks. Shoelaces should always be tied correctly.

  • Discourage distracted walking. Multi-tasking or not paying attention to ground surfaces can cause accidents.
